IPOD Touch 4th generation review

In September 2010, Apple released the 4th generation Ipod Touch. I received a 32gb model about a week after it was announced and have had a couple of weeks to fully digest having one of these units.

The 4th generation Ipod touch has been out since September 2010, and after 3 months of usage I’ve created this hands on review. The ipod touch is extremely light weight and thin, I often carry around a blackberry 9650 and the ipod touch in one pocket. In terms of usability, I’ve installed a variety of apps including kindle, latitude, pandora, sirius xm, chess, espn, netflix, fantasy football, hulu, and on and on. The kindle app works very well, however the screen and size just makes for an uncomfortable and non-practical reading device.

In terms of music and nike+ connectivity, the device sounds great for a portable audio device. The ipod touch instantly picks up my nike+ sensor in my shoes, and is a nice advancement from the older implementation of nike+ on my older ipod nanos. The on screen menu lets you change music, adjust volume, skip tracks, and see how far you’ve gone. I also use the ipod touch in my car with a BMW ipod connect kit, and the artists and songs show up in an easily navigated menu on the car’s display.

The Netflix app works well, but again the screen is very small so when I find the streaming video to be more of a convenience then a stand out feature – much like the kindle app and book reading on the ipod touch.

Web browsing is very fluid and a great relief even from blackberry OS 6, and thus why I carry around both devices. Battery life has been very impressive, going days without needing any charging. However when using the Facetime feature (ipod to ipod/iphone video chat) the Ipod touch can get very warm as the A4 processor inside heats up. Facetime and netflix also kill the battery at a much faster rate then most other applications on the ipod touch.

Finally, all around I find the device to be a very useful device. I can check my fantasy football on the go, can browse websites to get information quickly, and constantly use it to find out information such as movie show times without the hassle of going on a computer. Apple has hit a home run with this ipod touch, and it has definitely perked my interest in acquiring an Ipad 2 when they’re finally released.
