PA2V2 Pocket Amp

I picked up the PA2V2 pocket amp a few months ago to pair with the AKG K271s I reviewed two weeks ago; in short, I was not disappointed as it is both a great value and build, more than capable of handling my AKGs, and then some.

Before we get into the depths of the PA2V2 review, let’s talk about what an amp is for (for terms, know your headphones). Most headphones do not have their own power source, instead they are powered by whatever device you plug them into, be it an Mp3 player, Computer, or Home Stereo System (example: ipod outputs 30 mW). The purpose of an amp is to boost the mW output of your media source, to create a louder sound/drive speakers. The PA2V2 can output up to 200 mW of power, and increase your “loudness” by 610%. While many people do not own a pair of headphones that actually need an amp, it can be used with any pair of headphones, at some risk (blowing speakers). At this point you may be asking yourself if you need/want one. If you find your speakers/headphones not having quite enough sound or have headphones with an impedance around 64 ohms or higher, probably. If your only headphones are ipod ear buds, no.

Considering the features and capabilities of this amp, I’d aggressively argue that it is one of the best on the market in it’s price range and higher. Many amps typically range from $15 – $400, the difference being part quality, output quality, and transportability. While all amps will increase overall sound, not all will do it well. The PA2V2 not only acts as an amp, but creates a platform for a more vibrant sound, freshening the highs and reinforcing the lows. With these boosts to power, it cures any complaints I may have had about my AKGs, and made my earbuds truly sound canceling. Another major plus is that since this is a privately manufactured device, contacting the creator is much more personal; morbid as it may be, he has even offered to repair the amp free of charge, for the duration of his life.

The over-all construction is conventional, with base input/output, power and the like on the exterior. This amp is built to last, with a case strong enough to be walked on. While I won’t get specific with internals, from my brief conversations with the creator: you are getting your moneys worth. That said, the PA2V2 has the Review-Fi stamp of approval. Check out my favorite features and links below.
