Tonight, I’m reviewing Dynasty Electric, an electro-pop band out of Brooklyn. This weekend, I got the chance to listen to an advance copy of their new album Golden Arrows, and I have to say, I’m pretty impressed (the hipster in me is screaming his little head off about an advance album, but I’ll try to keep him quiet). These guys were described to me as ‘neo-hippy’ and ‘Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets Massive Attack’, and while I think that’s true, there’s more to it than that. This album does lay down some impressive electro/synth-pop, no doubt about it; but it also has a Chairlift meets Jack White meets the entire ’70s feel to it. You get a feel of seventies attitudes meets modern music listening to this album, and I think it’s a match that’s worth a shot.
The overall feel of this album for me was an almost anti-CAKE one. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on this site, but I have this fantasy that all of CAKE’s horribly depressing songs about relationships gone wrong and slow heartbreak all stem from the lead singer’s actual life. If the same stands for Dynasty Electric, then Jenny Electrik (yes, really) must have one hell of a boyfriend. The album’s all about love and falling in love and all of those other lovely things the seventies were so fond of; the first few tracks of the album even have the feel of a courtship, the early nervous passion, followed by intense emotion, and then comfortable love.
So, musically the album is both intriguing and unique; the tracks are nicely varied, and each one is a wonderful little snowflake waiting to get stuck in your head. Likewise, the emotional feel of the album is nice, just the post-valentines pick-me-up the world needed. I was pleasantly surprised by this album, and even if this review’s given away a bit of the surprise, I’m sure it’ll be just as pleasant. I’m told the album is coming out this spring, so keep your eyes open for it, okay?
